<text>This military button was created for Marine officers beginning in 1821. The button has a lined field with a raised border, 13 stars across the top, and an eagle with widespread wings clasping an anchor with its talons and an anchor rope in its beak. The size of this button (28.5 mm / 1 1/8") could have been used by either an officer or an enlisted man. Unfortunately for dating purposes, these button designs remained unchanged for the rest of the 19th and into the 20th century, even though the Marines adopted the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia in 1868. This button could have been made by the Scovill Company of Waterbury CT (now Morito Scovill based in Clarkesville, GA), although Albert (1969) mentions other possible companies as well, based in either Attleboro, MA or Waterbury, CT.</text>
