It even retained the entire paper label nearly perfectly. Sure enough, Wild Russian Vanya was sold in the 1960s-70s, making it only around 15 years old at most when it was excavated. It was exclusively produced and sold in the southeast, it was not a Russian import at all. Wild Russian Vanya was a fortified wine, also known as bum wine. These were cheaply made wines with spirits, fruit flavors, and sugar mixed in. Specifically, it was peach flavored. The label clearly states it was produced and bottled by Grower's Outlet Atlanta. It is not to be confused with the plant nursery also named Grower's Outlet which shows no sign of ever bottling alcohol. The trademark was owned by Seaboard Beverage Co. in Jacksonville, Florida, filed in 1962 but first used in 1960. In Florida, the drink was bottled by Seaboard themselves. Many whitewares have a white paste with a clear glaze that allows for decoration, such as a transfer printing*. Whiteware paste is also hard and semi-porous; it may even appear chalky. Whiteware is a form of refined earthenware and is generally fired at approximately 1100-1200° Celsius. Sometimes a separate category, cream-colored wares (or creamware) are categorized by their cream-colored hue and paste that has wide variation and often has the same decorative types as white earthenware. In this categorization cream-colored wares are included in the whiteware category as they can be difficult to differentiate with age and their separation is not as important to this collection as it may be to others. Another category, pearlware, was also included in this whiteware classification as they are a white earthenware that include a distinctive blue tint to the glaze to enhance the whiteness of the vessel, traditionally used as an identifier. Since it can be difficult to define the line between pearlware and whiteware, as both may use cobalt to enhance the whiteness of the body, they have been combined and can be separated by decoration if need be. *Transfer printing occurs when copper plated designs are transferred to tissue paper, which is then applied to white earthenware under a clear glaze. This was popular from the 1870s to the early 1900s when decals became popular for their ease of decorating mass-produced ceramics in the United States. Cresolene was a by-product of coal tar, and was usually used as a disinfectant. By the 1940s it was recognized by the FDA to be extremely toxic, but the Vapo-Cresolene company continued production into the 1950s. Part of the paper label still remains. Title A name given to the resource Unidentified Stoneware Description An account of the resource Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression. This example of stoneware is unique in this collection. Its paste is grey, highly compact, and has no visible inclusions. It was likely fired between approximately 1200-1350° Celsius. The exterior is smooth and the same color as the paste with lightning-like decoration and ridges on the interior. This particular pattern is not seen elsewhere in this collection, nor is the grey-colored stoneware paste. This piece of unidentified stoneware serves as an example of the variability of both this collection and of stoneware overall. There is no glaze associated with this type, so the exterior texture is rough matching the interior texture. The surface of the ceramics may be rubbed smooth or may even show evidence of firing. They can appear as any vessel form and are the most basic type of earthenware, often used for utilitarian purposes. These ceramics are fired at a low temperature, approximately 900-1200° Celsius. The drink was developed by Lee C. Ward of Los Angeles in the late 1930s. The TruAde company moved to Chicago in the 40s. A 1948 advertisement in the Atlanta Journal called it "the newest drink for true refreshment" so it probably reached the Atlanta market in 1948. The bottle design seems to not have changed much until the brand fizzled out in the 60s, and the ACL print on our bottle is in bad shape, so there is unfortunately no way to more accurately date this specific bottle, or identify the bottler. From internet samples, it was also filed/bottled in (at least) West Virginia, California, Wyoming, Kuwait, and Germany. In 1959, they attempted to file the trademark in Puerto Rico, but Coca-Cola opposed it, resulting in a lawsuit claiming Puerto Ricans would confuse the two companies. It seems the Coca-Cola Company was trying to create a cola monopoly in Puerto Rico, but the court ruled in favor of Topp because the claim was quite unfounded. The exact year the company stopped production is unclear. A Topp Quality bottle dated from 1972 on Ebay lists the Topp Cola Co. as a division of the Tasty-Mates Company in Camden, New Jersey. However Topp-Cola and Top-Quality bottles on Etsy from 1979 were still bottled in Georgia by the original company. Bradfield’s Bradfield Regulator Company. The term "regulator" was a reference to the medicine’s alleged ability to regulate the menses. A miraculous claim at the time, yet merely one claim among many for The Mother’s Friend, whose primary claims to functionality were the ability to streamline and render painless the process of childbirth. The supposed benefits of consuming The Mother’s Friend went on to include everything from a speedy “confinement” to helping make babies pretty and healthy in the womb. These claims would likely have continued ad absurdum had not the federal Food and Drug Act of 1906 required a bit more truth in advertising. Once the compound was chemically analyzed, the claims toward the results of using the product had to reflect the facts. In this way, it was shown that The Mother’s Friend should not be recommended for internal use at all. Instead, the compound should only be applied to the skin. The advertisement entitled “Mothers: Do You Know?” may appear disingenuous by insisting that there are no potent drug-compounds such as strychnine, opium, or morphine within it. Despite the various other miraculous claims typically attributed to products that did contain those drugs, in the case of the Mothers’ Friend, it was in fact true that no such narcotics were present. While the compound was not a poison, neither was it the miraculous medicine it claimed to be. Consuming Mother’s Friend internally would likely only regulate a woman’s bowel movements, certainly not her menses or her pregnancy. However, twice during 1909, consignments of Mother’s Friend were seized under the Pure Food and Drugs Act (1906) and deemed misbranded because of the claims made. Changing the claims made in regards to the compound’s qualities allowed Bradfield to continue a relatively successful production of Mother’s Friend as a lotion. In fact, the rights to produce the substance were bought in 1986. It is still being produced today, as a lotion for tight skin due to pregnancy. Ironically, the company to buy Bradfield’s famous liniment was none other than the S.S.S. Company! The lotion is still available, as of this writing, in some stores and online. The company was active 1923-1974, closing just before MARTA excavations began. This doll seems to date to 1956, as that is when similar models are dated. The rubber may have been a lighter color originally but the company also manufactured darker-skinned dolls so it may have been a darker variant of the complete doll pictured. The year would have been stamped on the back between the shoulders. No advertisements for Sun Crest were found in the Atlanta Journal Archives and few are being sold online, so it is difficult to date. The NuGrape headquarters was located at 794 Ralph McGill Boulevard and was registered as a National Historic Place in 1996. Title A name given to the resource Soft Paste Porcelain Description An account of the resource Soft paste porcelain originated in England and is a cheaply made copy of the hard paste China-imported porcelain of the time. Also known as “artificial” porcelain, soft paste porcelain is characterized by a dense and chalky paste with little to no visible inclusions. It has high variation and a slightly higher porosity than hard paste porcelain. It may contain black specks on the surface of the paste, but this is more commons with hard paste porcelain (Cushion and Cushion 1992). Soft paste porcelain is fired twice: once at a higher temperature to create the base “biscuit” ware (1100-1250° C), and then again at a lower temperature to for the glaze (1050-1150° C) (Ramsay and Ramsay 2008). Soft paste porcelain is fired at a lower temperature and for a shorter amount of time than hard paste porcelain. Porcelain can be identified in a variety of ways, but the most common is to shine a light through the vessel. If the light can be seen, it is most likely porcelain. This is more frequently used to identify hard paste porcelain as it is thinner with a more glass-like paste. Title A name given to the resource Salt Glazed Stoneware Description An account of the resource Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression. Stoneware is characterized by a hard, impermeable, and non-porous body with a wide variety of paste colors—usually buff/tan but can sometimes be brown or grey. It is generally fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. Salt glaze stoneware is one of the most common glazes, characterized by a dimpled “orange peel” texture. This occurs when salt is introduced to the kiln during the firing process. The color of the salt glaze can range from light grey or tan to dark grey but can also have a reddish hue depending on the iron content of the clay and variable kiln conditions (Greer 1981: 35). Salt glaze is usually seen with an Albany slip (see “Albany slip stoneware” for more details) on the inside of the vessel after 1860 and without an Albany slip interior prior to 1860. Production of salt glaze stoneware slowed to a near halt after 1900 (Greer 1981:263). The Atlanta Rye-Ola Bottling Works was established in 1910 by John Bradberry. The plant was originally located at 92 North Forsyth... J.J. Peek moved his Rye-Ola Company from Birmingham to Atlanta in 1912. Offices were in the Rhodes Building for the next six years. Peek reorganized as the Peek Beverage Company in 1916 and moved to new quarters at 682 Dekalb. He sold extracts as both Rye-Ola and Peek's Cola. Many different ads were run for the product in 1903 and 1904 Atlanta Journal newspapers. Samples were sold for a 2-cent stamp and a full bottle (presumably what we have here) was 25 cents. The last mention of Eaton Drug Co in these newspapers outside of those two years was in 1910 for pencils that were "always sharp," so it can be presumed that the product was short-lived. This teacup is missing the handle and the saucer. There is no visible makers mark, however identical examples were found on the internet that were made by Royal(USA) and were lacking makers marks. Title A name given to the resource Rockingham Ware Description An account of the resource Rockingham-wares share many features of yellowwares and are often categorized as a type of yellowware, though some earthenwares and stonewares also have a rockingham glaze (Claney 2004:32). They are characterized by their thin, brown glaze overlaying a yellow body. They can also have apple-green glazes that were common from 1900-1940, featured in this collection. After the introduction of Staffordshire potters to North America in the 1830s, rockingham-ware became very popular and can be seen with either a uniform or streaked glaze depending on the year of production. Streaked glazes were popular from 1840-1870, with uniform glazes reigning in popularity from 1830-1840 and again after 1870. The pastes of these vessels were likely fired at a range of 1100-1350° C depending on the type of vessel used (earthenware, stoneware, etc.). An ad specifically targeting doctors in a WWI medical training camp brochure touted Reif's Special as a healthy alternative to soft drinks, also highlighting that it was made in a very clean & sterile facility. In another ad in the Atlanta Journal it advertises itself as a non-alcoholic alternative to beer. Cereal beverages are similar to beer in that they are made of a cereal grain but they were usually had very low alcohol content. Is it a soft drink? It was 0.49% alcohol... It did not go out of production in 1920 after the Prohibition act, though, as there is a mention of it in the Atlanta Journal in 1921. Reif's Special seemed to peak in 1916-1919 based on the mentions in various newspapers. The Purity company went out of business in 1933. Dodd of Hagan & Dodd Co. It began being bottled and produced widely in 1902 with the formation of the Red Rock Company, and the patent was registered in 1903. It skyrocketed in popularity in its early years and a 1903 article in the Atlanta Journal claimed it to be "the best known soft drink today." The same article says that the company ordered one million bottles to be made around that time. It also mentions the bottling plant's address as 214 Auburn Avenue. This bottle must date to after 1903 because it says "registered."
