Yet another early Coca-Cola competitor. Nervola was the creation of Jefferson J. Peek / Peek Beverage Company in Birmingham AL, alongside other drinks Rye-Ola and Wiseola. All the drinks ceased production by 1922.
The bottle itself is very heavy with a thick base making the actual capacity of the bottle quite small.
The star mark on the bottom is unfortunately too common to discern a specific bottle manufacturer.

From nesbittsorange.com - "The Nesbitt Fruit Products Company was founded in 1924 by Hugh S. Nesbitt. The company produced syrups to be used in soda fountains. [] The original plant, occupied in 1925, was located at: <br />768 Ceres Avenue <br />Los Angeles, California <br /><br />[] In 1937, in anticipation of beginning production of a bottled version of carbonated Nesbitt's Orange Drink, they began construction of a new plant at <br />2946 E 11th St Los Angeles, California. <br />It was completed in 1938. <br /><br />When they started bottling it in 1939 it was distinguished by the fact that it was made from 10% California orange juice. The brand was franchised to independent bottling companies all over the United States and around the world. Besides Orange, other flavors bottled included: Creme Soda, Grape, Strawberry, Root Beer, Lemon-Lime, to name a few. Nesbitt also made Sprig, a grapefruit-lime drink (Sprig was sold in 1959). On January 1, 1946 there were 188 Nesbitt Franchise Holders in 39 States, 2 territories (Hawaii and Alaska) and Mexico." <br /><br />The ACL label with the "Nesbitt's" written horizontally (instead of diagonally) was used from 1940-1942. As per the back label, it was bottled by the Orange Crush Bottling Co. of Atlanta. Interesting that the Orange Crush Co. would bottle a competing orange flavored drink.

New Yorker Pale Dry Ginger Ale was not in fact from New York but from Atlanta. It was mentioned in the AJC archives from 1933-1954, produced by the New Yorker Ginger Ale Company.
The date code on the bottom of the bottle is "3" which means it is from 1943.
In 1935 the company's address was 269 Luckie St. NW, which was a newly constructed building, and the company remained there until 1944. It is now in the area of Centennial Olympic Park. In 1945 it seemed to have moved to 537 Ponce de Leon Ave.

The Nova Kola Bottling Company was chartered in Atlanta by E.C. Lester, W.F. Lester Jr, J.R. Collier, and G.W. Collier in 1910. The company was charged with fraud in 1912. The drink was only advertised in newspapers from 1910-1912. However, a 1917 postcard of the bridge across the Chattahoochee at Marietta St (no longer exists) shows a Nova Kola building in the foreground.

The label of this bottle does not survive, the only way to identify the bottle is the patent number embossed near the heel of the bottle. It says US patent d-130075 which is indeed a 1941 patent for the bottle shape by the Nu-Grape Company of Atlanta. It is a 14-year patent which means it was produced between 1941-1955.

Par-T-Pak was a product of the Nehi Cola Company. It was introduced in 1933 as a "party" (mixer) drink. It came in a variety of colors and in a "party size" 32oz but this bottle is a 6oz single serving. The copyright year would have been in the part of the label that is deteriorated on the bottom.
This style the label seems to be c. 1945 based on photos of similar bottles online.

Penguin Lighter
Description
An account of the resource
This is a Penguin lighter with the maker’s mark in prime condition. The bottom of the steel lighter reads, " ‘High Quality Lighter’ ‘Penguin No. 111957 Japan’ " Penguin manufactured lighters very similar to the popular "Zippo" lighters of the 1930s-70s. The style was known for being high quality, durable, and refillable, so companies such as Penguin sought to copy it. Penguin even manufactured lighters for soldiers in the Vietnam war, and many survive in the New York Historical Society's collection. The company was active from the 1950s-1970s.

“Figures 30 and 31 and both pieces of glass soda bottles…Figure 31 is a glass fragment of a Pepsi-Cola bottle. Both Figure 30 and 31 are representative of bottle designs used during the 1900s.”

“Pepsi-Cola, first introduced as Brad’s drink in 1893 in North Carolina, has been a popular soda company since 1902. In the early 1900s, the company started distributed the drink in bottles. Since then, the bottles have come in different styles. The bottle found in our collection is dated to 1955. The bottle has the “wave” pattern on the shoulder that was started in the 1940s and came in two color variations: red and white, or red, white, and blue. With this new wave pattern, a double dot logo was used, but discontinued in 1948. The bottle in our collection has one dot between the Pepsi and Cola logo which places the bottle after 1950 when one dot began to be used. The date can also be found at the bottom of the bottle. The year is usually the second number.” (Fall 2017 – Group 1).

Pepto Mangan (Gude) is an iron and manganese based medicine created by Dr. August Gude from Leipzig, Germany in the 1890s. While manufactured in Germany, Pepto Mangan was circulated in the U.S. by drug pharmacist, Max J. Breitenbach who would later own it in 1917. Bottled in a six-sided container, the mixture advertised itself as a clear, palatable liquid treatment for anemia, acid reflux, and stomach problems. The last known advertisement was in 1985 by MedTech Labs.

Phillips Milk of Magnesia is actually still in production under the same name. Unlike a lot of medicines of this period, it actually does have scientifically proven uses as a laxative and antacid. It was originally produced by an Englishman, Charles Henry Phillips in Stamford, Connecticut, and is essentially just a mix of magnesia hydrate and water.
The most common, "iconic" bottle associated with it is colbalt blue, reflected in the modern product's color as well, but ours is aqua.
On the bottom of the front, it says it was patented Aug. 21 1886. Interesting, the Society for Historical Archeology, which wrote a comprehensive report on the variations of Phillips bottles, does not list this specific variant with the 1886 patent. However, the design matches bottles produced 1900-1906. It was also sold in tablet form, in smaller bottles.
The advertisement, sourced from ebay, is from 1907.

Players was a soda brand bottled by Red Rock Bottling Co. circa late 1940s. Little is known about the brand but it likely had multiple flavors that would have been distinguished by its cap, as was typical of Red Rock drinks. It was probably bottled in Atlanta- as well.<br />According to the user CanadianBottles on antique-bottles.net, <strong>"You may not be able to find any ads because Red Rock may not have considered it to be a brand worth advertising. It might not have even been a genuine brand in the way that Red Rock itself was, it could have been used for any other generic flavours the local bottling franchise sold. In those days a local franchise wouldn't usually just bottle the franchise product, they'd also bottle a bunch of other stuff using their own bottles. The only reference to Hagan & Dodd’s “Purity Brand” is in a 1906 newspaper advertisement where it is referred to as an extract.
The company was originally named the Hagan Brothers Company, but it was changed to the Hagan & Dodd Company in 1903, creating the terminus post quem for this bottle. It was renamed to the Red Rock Company in 1929, providing a terminus ante quem. Though the brand is apparently registered (as a trademark) according to the bottle, I was unable to find the trademark record in reports issued 1903-1919 and 1921-1925, despite finding ones for Red Rock and H&D’s other brands “Ko-Nut” in 1911 and “Long Green” in 1922 (neither of which are represented in the collection). “Purity” was a very common brand name for many types of food products.

Rainbow Ginger Ale was manufactured by Thomas L. Langston & co. The company address was 267 Edgewood, which is now under a highway overpass. A few advertisements for the soda were in the Atlanta Journal in 1907. The city directory that lists the company address was from 1909, so it can be assumed that this fragment is from within that small time span.
According to Kolawars: Atlanta by Dennis I. Smith it was patented in 1906.

Red Rock Ginger Ale was created in Atlanta, GA in 1885 by Lee Hagan and G.T. Dodd of Hagan & Dodd Co. It began being bottled and produced widely in 1902 with the formation of the Red Rock Company, and the patent was registered in 1903. It skyrocketed in popularity in its early years and a 1903 article in the Atlanta Journal claimed it to be "the best known soft drink today." The same article says that the company ordered one million bottles to be made around that time. It also mentions the bottling plant's address as 214 Auburn Avenue. This bottle must date to after 1903 because it says "registered."

Reif's Special was a product of the Purity Extract & Tonic Company of Chattanooga, reported to be at the corner of Broad & 2nd St. It was named after Charles Reif, owner of said company and Chattanooga Brewing Company and Chattanooga Glass Company.
An ad specifically targeting doctors in a WWI medical training camp brochure touted Reif's Special as a healthy alternative to soft drinks, also highlighting that it was made in a very clean & sterile facility.
In another ad in the Atlanta Journal it advertises itself as a non-alcoholic alternative to beer.
Cereal beverages are similar to beer in that they are made of a cereal grain but they were usually had very low alcohol content.
Is it a soft drink? It was 0.49% alcohol...
It did not go out of production in 1920 after the Prohibition act, though, as there is a mention of it in the Atlanta Journal in 1921. Reif's Special seemed to peak in 1916-1919 based on the mentions in various newspapers. The Purity company went out of business in 1933.

Rockingham Ware
Description
An account of the resource
Rockingham-wares share many features of yellowwares and are often categorized as a type of yellowware, though some earthenwares and stonewares also have a rockingham glaze (Claney 2004:32). They are characterized by their thin, brown glaze overlaying a yellow body. They can also have apple-green glazes that were common from 1900-1940, featured in this collection. After the introduction of Staffordshire potters to North America in the 1830s, rockingham-ware became very popular and can be seen with either a uniform or streaked glaze depending on the year of production. Streaked glazes were popular from 1840-1870, with uniform glazes reigning in popularity from 1830-1840 and again after 1870. The pastes of these vessels were likely fired at a range of 1100-1350° C depending on the type of vessel used (earthenware, stoneware, etc.).

This tea cup was most likely produced by the Royal (USA) China Company (Sebring, Ohio). The company produced a popular series of dinnerware with artwork originally created by Currier and Ives (a 19th and early 20th century lithograph company), in this case the "Horse and Buggy" or "Old Grist Mill" pattern. The Royal Foot Wash, flagship product of Eaton Drug Co, claimed to soothe itchy, blistering, or peeling feet as well as act as an antiperspirant. Many different ads were run for the product in 1903 and 1904 Atlanta Journal newspapers. Samples were sold for a 2-cent stamp and a full bottle (presumably what we have here) was 25 cents. The last mention of Eaton Drug Co in these newspapers outside of those two years was in 1910 for pencils that were "always sharp," so it can be presumed that the product was short-lived.

From <em>KolaWars: Atlanta</em> by Dennis I. Smith:<br />"Rye-Ola was invented in Birmingham by Jefferson J. Peek, who was formerly involved with the creation of Nervola and Wiseola.<br />The Atlanta Rye-Ola Bottling Works was established in 1910 by John Bradberry. The plant was originally located at 92 North Forsyth... <br />J.J. Peek moved his Rye-Ola Company from Birmingham to Atlanta in 1912. Offices were in the Rhodes Building for the next six years. Peek reorganized as the Peek Beverage Company in 1916 and moved to new quarters at 682 Dekalb. He sold extracts as both Rye-Ola and Peek's Cola. Bottlers were established as far as Oregon in the mid-1920s. Salt Glazed Stoneware
Description
An account of the resource
Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression. <br /><br />Stoneware is characterized by a hard, impermeable, and non-porous body with a wide variety of paste colors—usually buff/tan but can sometimes be brown or grey. It is generally fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. Salt glaze stoneware is one of the most common glazes, characterized by a dimpled “orange peel” texture. This occurs when salt is introduced to the kiln during the firing process. The color of the salt glaze can range from light grey or tan to dark grey but can also have a reddish hue depending on the iron content of the clay and variable kiln conditions (Greer 1981: 35). Salt glaze is usually seen with an Albany slip (see “Albany slip stoneware” for more details) on the inside of the vessel after 1860 and without an Albany slip interior prior to 1860. Production of salt glaze stoneware slowed to a near halt after 1900 (Greer 1981:263).

Another questionable cure-all. It claimed to be, according to the box, "For disorders of the liver; sick headache arising from bilious condition; constipation of the bowels; sour stomach; biliousness."

Soft Paste Porcelain
Description
An account of the resource
Soft paste porcelain originated in England and is a cheaply made copy of the hard paste China-imported porcelain of the time. Also known as “artificial” porcelain, soft paste porcelain is characterized by a dense and chalky paste with little to no visible inclusions. It has high variation and a slightly higher porosity than hard paste porcelain. It may contain black specks on the surface of the paste, but this is more commons with hard paste porcelain (Cushion and Cushion 1992). Soft paste porcelain is fired twice: once at a higher temperature to create the base “biscuit” ware (1100-1250° C), and then again at a lower temperature to for the glaze (1050-1150° C) (Ramsay and Ramsay 2008). Soft paste porcelain is fired at a lower temperature and for a shorter amount of time than hard paste porcelain. Porcelain can be identified in a variety of ways, but the most common is to shine a light through the vessel. If the light can be seen, it is most likely porcelain. This is more frequently used to identify hard paste porcelain as it is thinner with a more glass-like paste.

This Sprite bottle fragment, embossed with "CRATER LAKE NATL PARK" on its base, was from an advertising campaign in collaboration with the National Park Service to promote its "Golden Eagle Passport" and a bottlecap sweepstakes to see the country. These bottles were in production from 1966-1978.
The heel of the bottle has a "69," indicating its date of manufacture was in 1969.

Description
An account of the resource
Sun Crest was a product of the NuGrape company. NuGrape was acquired by the Moxie Company in 1968 so this bottle must predate that. However, it says "70" on the bottom, so it is possible it is from 1970, though at that point it probably would have been labeled as being bottled by the Moxie Company. No advertisements for Sun Crest were found in the Atlanta Journal Archives and few are being sold online, so it is difficult to date.
The NuGrape headquarters was located at 794 Ralph McGill Boulevard and was registered as a National Historic Place in 1996.

Sun Rubber Company of Barberton, Ohio was better known for their automobile and Disney toys than their dolls, and is not particularly popular among doll collectors. The company was active 1923-1974, closing just before MARTA excavations began.
This doll seems to date to 1956, as that is when similar models are dated. The rubber may have been a lighter color originally but the company also manufactured darker-skinned dolls so it may have been a darker variant of the complete doll pictured. The year would have been stamped on the back between the shoulders.

Suncrest was a brand of orange soda first produced by the Nugrape Company in 1938.
The biggest clue for dating this can comes from the text on the reverse of the logo:
"Bottled under authority of Moxie-Monarch-Nugrape Co., Doraville, GA, 30340"
The Moxie Company combined with the Nugrape Company in 1968 which facilitated the company name change. It is possible that this can was very recently deposited when it was collected by the archaeologists in the mid 1970s.
Interestingly the top of the can says "Please don't litter// Dispose of properly" which, clearly someone didn't abide by, given it was found on the ground...

These casing are from a .380 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge. While this is a common cartridge type, the manufacturer is quite informative. Super Vel was a small producer of “high performance” ammunition during the 1960’s and ‘70’s, whose client base included contracts with several police departments (Super Vel 2017), as well as the U.S. Secret Service. They did not begin production until 1965.

T.P. Marshall was the president of the Baby Ease Drug Company from around 1902 until the 1930s. Assumedly, this bottle contained Baby Ease. It was a remedy to help babies with various digestive problems. To sell the product, Marshall often used scare tactics in the newspapers that "Babies are dying by the thousands" and a "free gold ring" promotion. By 1906, the company's advertisements and packaging said it was based in Atlanta rather than Macon.
According to the 1896 Macon City Directory, T.P. Marshall's drug store was located at the corner of Hawthorne St. and 2nd St. Today, this is a day care center.

Labeled as "The Greatest American Whiskey," Yellowstone Bourbon was created in 1872 in Louisville, when the namesake national park was opened. D. H. Taylor and John T. Williams joined as "Taylor & Williams" in 1876, though the bourbon was originally made by J.B. Dant. According to bourbonveach.com, the paper label (traces found on our bottle) appeared after Taylor retired in 1892. This bottle is likely pre-prohibition because the full word "incorporated" appeared on the Yellowstone advertisements pre-prohibition, and the abbreviation "inc." appeared after, though the label stayed relatively the same. The brand has been revived by Limestone Branch since 2014.
