McWilliams at 223 Garnett St, according to a single 1928 advertisement. It originated in Tampa, Florida as early as 1926. The company sponsored a junior baseball team in Columbus, Georgia in 1940. A newspaper in Macon, Georgia has a few classified advertisements in search of a dealer for the juice brand in 1941, sent by the Fruit Juice Company Distributors of Thomasville, Georgia. The company went bankrupt, but reversed it, in 1955. Based on the style of the bottle, it is probably from the 1920s-1940s. The “S in a circle” mark was used by multiple glassmakers in the 20th century, none in the Southeast, so it is difficult to determine the manufacturer. Two bottles, one called <a href="https://martaphoenixproject.gsuanthropology.com/items/show/231">Gould Beverages (Quality Plus)</a> and the other called Better Goulds Beverages, were found in the same box and they are the only two examples of Goulds in the collection. They look strikingly different. p407 was bottled by the Orange Crush Bottling Co. in Atlanta while p418 was bottled by the Goulds Better Beverage Co. in one of three cities in Mississippi. It could be assumed that the company was based in Mississippi and sold bottling rights to the Orange Crush Bottling Co. for distribution in Georgia, but upon looking at other examples of the bottles online there was an instance of Better Goulds being bottled by Crush in Atlanta as well. Notably, it also does not have the ingredients listed on the back as p418 does. p407 also looks stylistically older than p418 and the “better” implies it was improving an existing product. p418 only has a small empty “keystone” mark on the base. The keystone shape was characteristic of the Knox Glass Co., and typically the specific plant would be identified by a letter within the keystone, but there is not one on this bottle. Knox Glass’s last plants were bought in 1968. p418 has the ingredients listed on the back, indicating it was likely produced after the 1966 Fair Packaging and Labelling Act. Therefore, this bottle can be dated from 1966-1968. There were barely any internet resources on a beverage by the name of Gould other than Ebay listings for the bottles. This led me to check the Atlanta Journal-Constitution archives, where there was also no results for any variation of “Gould(s) beverages” or “Goulds Better Beverage Co.” The last option was to look into the Orange Crush Bottling Company, and though there were few internet sources on it as well, in the AJC archive I found that the president of the Orange Crush Bottling Co. was named Fred S. Gould and it went bankrupt in 1956. This leads me to believe the Gould Beverage was named after said president. At some point before the bankruptcy, they decided to change the formula of the drink and brand it as “Better Goulds Beverage” (similar to “New Coke” in the 1980s). It is possible that the original Gould and Better Goulds could have existed at the same time, but in the case it was replaced it must have happened after p407 was produced in 1954. Perhaps after the bankruptcy of the Orange Crush Bottling Co., the Goulds Better Beverage Co. was formed in Mississippi and retained the same bottle design. The drink was developed by Lee C. Ward of Los Angeles in the late 1930s. The TruAde company moved to Chicago in the 40s. A 1948 advertisement in the Atlanta Journal called it "the newest drink for true refreshment" so it probably reached the Atlanta market in 1948. The bottle design seems to not have changed much until the brand fizzled out in the 60s, and the ACL print on our bottle is in bad shape, so there is unfortunately no way to more accurately date this specific bottle, or identify the bottler. The copyright year would have been in the part of the label that is deteriorated on the bottom. This style the label seems to be c. 1945 based on photos of similar bottles online. There were only 8 mentions and three advertise Bamboo Ginger Ale, so it can be assumed that is what this bottle contained. Another newspaper mentions the company leased 308 Whitehall St. in 1930. One side of the bottle says Savannah, and the other says Atlanta, meaning it could have been bottled in either city. Topp also made a root beer and Topp-Up soda, and later Topp Quality. According to an unsourced blog post, Topp was bottled in Atlanta by <a href="https://martaphoenixproject.gsuanthropology.com/items/show/180">May's</a>. "Topp-Cola" was first copyrighted in 1958. From internet samples, it was also filed/bottled in (at least) West Virginia, California, Wyoming, Kuwait, and Germany. In 1959, they attempted to file the trademark in Puerto Rico, but Coca-Cola opposed it, resulting in a lawsuit claiming Puerto Ricans would confuse the two companies. It seems the Coca-Cola Company was trying to create a cola monopoly in Puerto Rico, but the court ruled in favor of Topp because the claim was quite unfounded. The exact year the company stopped production is unclear. A Topp Quality bottle dated from 1972 on Ebay lists the Topp Cola Co. as a division of the Tasty-Mates Company in Camden, New Jersey. However Topp-Cola and Top-Quality bottles on Etsy from 1979 were still bottled in Georgia by the original company. This would have been excavated in 1979 at the latest so it cannot date from after then. An ad specifically targeting doctors in a WWI medical training camp brochure touted Reif's Special as a healthy alternative to soft drinks, also highlighting that it was made in a very clean & sterile facility. In another ad in the Atlanta Journal it advertises itself as a non-alcoholic alternative to beer. Cereal beverages are similar to beer in that they are made of a cereal grain but they were usually had very low alcohol content. Is it a soft drink? It was 0.49% alcohol... It did not go out of production in 1920 after the Prohibition act, though, as there is a mention of it in the Atlanta Journal in 1921. Reif's Special seemed to peak in 1916-1919 based on the mentions in various newspapers. The Purity company went out of business in 1933.
