There is no glaze associated with this type, so the exterior texture is rough matching the interior texture. The surface of the ceramics may be rubbed smooth or may even show evidence of firing. They can appear as any vessel form and are the most basic type of earthenware, often used for utilitarian purposes. These ceramics are fired at a low temperature, approximately 900-1200° Celsius. This categorization primarily serves as a general placement for coarse earthenware than cannot be identified based on glaze. A search for the "Atlanta Bottling Company" yields two possible companies, the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, which according to a 1967 lawsuit was a trade name of "Atlanta Bottling Company." A 1972 job posting in the Atlanta Journal for an Atlanta Bottling Company was located at 3665 OLD JONESBORO RD., S. W. which according to according to a 1966 manufacturing directory is the location of the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. They were involved in a few lawsuits in the 60s-70s so it seems that was when that company was active. The Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company was established in 1902 and is still active to this day. However, they were very rarely referred to without the "Coca-Cola." on advertising. This bottle looks much older than the 60s-70s, if it were to be the product of the Dr. Pepper option. The unique shape somewhat resembles the <a href="https://martaphoenixproject.gsuanthropology.com/items/show/196">Pay-Day</a> bottle from around the 1920s. By the 60s-70s sodas usually used ACL (painted) labels over embossed bottles. Hi-Nuf and the Atlanta Bottling Co. is a mystery, for now. The bottling plant would be labeled on the back but unfortunately, the paint is gone. There is some residue but it is hard to read. There does not appear to be residue of a logo on the neck (characteristic of bottles from 1945-) so it probably dates before then. "Coke moved to the Harlequin design that is sometimes indicated as the small diamond can. The first version is available as a flat and a pull top, with the flat top being a much tougher find. The distinction between the first and second version of this can is made by the placement of the 'Contents 12 FL OZS'. The first version has it at the top, while the second, available only as a pull tab for the first time, shows it at the bottom." This is a second version of the Harlequin can, because the '12 FL OZ' is at the bottom of the can. Interestingly, though, the coloring on this can is green. Rather than it having been originally green, it was probably the result of the color changing after years underground. There is still some red on the opposite side of the can. The next mention is from September 1903, in an actual advertisement. For the launch of the Aphro company, they offered prizes for people who collected the most amount of coupons from buying the drink. The fact that four Aphro bottles were found together implies the marketing strategy may have been successful (at least for a short time). Originally they were located at 10 Tabernacle Pl. but put the property up for sale only a few months later in December, as announced in the real estate section of the newspaper. The property stayed up for sale for a few months --the newspaper announcements stopped in April 1904. There are no other mentions of them in the newspaper aside from a few job offerings, until the company's assets were sold in early 1908. KolaWars: Atlanta says that the company instead became the "Non Such Pure Food Company" in 1907. It also mentions its address as 106 Luckie St. Very little information on this company exists because it was in business for only a few years.
