It was a cream that came in a milk class container. The product claimed to neutralize body odors without clogging the pores or using strong perfumes. It was first locally available in Philadelphia but became a national brand in 1898. We have the base of one of these containers, which has embossing, while the lid was smooth with a label. Unlike a lot of medicines of this period, it actually does have scientifically proven uses as a laxative and antacid. It was originally produced by an Englishman, Charles Henry Phillips in Stamford, Connecticut, and is essentially just a mix of magnesia hydrate and water. The most common, "iconic" bottle associated with it is colbalt blue, reflected in the modern product's color as well, but ours is aqua. On the bottom of the front, it says it was patented Aug. 21 1886. Interesting, the Society for Historical Archeology, which wrote a comprehensive report on the variations of Phillips bottles, does not list this specific variant with the 1886 patent. However, the design matches bottles produced 1900-1906. It was also sold in tablet form, in smaller bottles. The advertisement, sourced from ebay, is from 1907. Cresolene was a by-product of coal tar, and was usually used as a disinfectant. By the 1940s it was recognized by the FDA to be extremely toxic, but the Vapo-Cresolene company continued production into the 1950s. Part of the paper label still remains. Two identical bottles of Vapo-cresolene were found in site 9Da89, in different locations. Title A name given to the resource The Mother's Friend Description An account of the resource From Medicinal Vessels of the First Gilded Age: The Mother’s Friend was one of the flagship products of J. Bradfield’s Bradfield Regulator Company. The term "regulator" was a reference to the medicine’s alleged ability to regulate the menses. A miraculous claim at the time, yet merely one claim among many for The Mother’s Friend, whose primary claims to functionality were the ability to streamline and render painless the process of childbirth. The supposed benefits of consuming The Mother’s Friend went on to include everything from a speedy “confinement” to helping make babies pretty and healthy in the womb. These claims would likely have continued ad absurdum had not the federal Food and Drug Act of 1906 required a bit more truth in advertising. Once the compound was chemically analyzed, the claims toward the results of using the product had to reflect the facts. In this way, it was shown that The Mother’s Friend should not be recommended for internal use at all. Instead, the compound should only be applied to the skin. The advertisement entitled “Mothers: Do You Know?” may appear disingenuous by insisting that there are no potent drug-compounds such as strychnine, opium, or morphine within it. Despite the various other miraculous claims typically attributed to products that did contain those drugs, in the case of the Mothers’ Friend, it was in fact true that no such narcotics were present. While the compound was not a poison, neither was it the miraculous medicine it claimed to be. Consuming Mother’s Friend internally would likely only regulate a woman’s bowel movements, certainly not her menses or her pregnancy. However, twice during 1909, consignments of Mother’s Friend were seized under the Pure Food and Drugs Act (1906) and deemed misbranded because of the claims made. Changing the claims made in regards to the compound’s qualities allowed Bradfield to continue a relatively successful production of Mother’s Friend as a lotion. In fact, the rights to produce the substance were bought in 1986. It is still being produced today, as a lotion for tight skin due to pregnancy. Ironically, the company to buy Bradfield’s famous liniment was none other than the S.S.S. Company! The lotion is still available, as of this writing, in some stores and online. Many different ads were run for the product in 1903 and 1904 Atlanta Journal newspapers. Samples were sold for a 2-cent stamp and a full bottle (presumably what we have here) was 25 cents. The last mention of Eaton Drug Co in these newspapers outside of those two years was in 1910 for pencils that were "always sharp," so it can be presumed that the product was short-lived. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Kilmer's Swamp Root Kidney Liver and Bladder Cure Description An account of the resource From eighteen years old, Dr. Sylvester Andral Kilmer studied homeopathic remedies before opening a practice in Binghamton, New York. The Swamp Root Kidney Liver and Bladder cure was a kidney diuretic and mild laxative. From Medicinal Vessels of the First Gilded Age: The indications or uses for this product as provided by the manufacturer are: A diuretic for the kidneys and a mild laxative. "Swamp-Root" tends to promote the flow of urine thereby aiding the kidneys in their necessary work of eliminating waste matter. By 1930 the official ingredients list was: alcohol 10%, buchu leaves, scullcap leaves, golden seal root, colombo root, valerian root, cinnamon, oil of juniper, oil of birch, balsam copaiba, balsam tolu, venice turpentine, peppermint herb, rhubarb root, mandrake root, sassafras, cape aloes. Kilmer’s Swamp Root was introduced in 1879 by Dr. Sylvester Andral Kilmer of Binghamton, NY. The bottles in the MARTA collection were all found at 9Fu91 with three different embossed labels. Six of them refer to the product as a “cure”. The 1906 PFDA made that claim illegal, suggesting that these bottles were manufactured before that date. One vessel uses the word “remedy” in place of “cure” signaling that its production was post-1906. Oddly, this particular vessel was also the only sample size of Kilmer’s Swamp-Root in the collection as well. While the swamp-root nostrum was invented and first produced by S. Andral Kilmer in 1879, his brother Jonas joined him and eventually bought out Andral. Jonas continued to maintain operations until his death in 1912. At that point Jonas’ son Willis Kilmer took the helm of his uncle’s “great cure”. Willis Kilmer was a savvy businessman and made a small fortune producing Swamp-Root. Therefore it can be assumed they were deposited around the same time, despite the differing bottle designs. The logo variation is the same on both bottles, with a solid crest instead of the map pattern that was much more common and still persists today. Both bottles were manufactured by the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, based in Toledo, OH, known for the “Diamond and Oval with I inside” maker's mark, but they had multitudes of different manufacturing plants. Clear bottle- This bottle likely contained an alternate soda flavor under the Canada Dry brand instead of the classic ginger ale, as seen in the bottles labeled "Canada Dry Beverages" instead of "Canada Dry [the Champagne of] Ginger Ale[s]." The flavor itself was not indicated on the bottle's print, it would be on the cap, which is unfortunately rarely found alongside excavated soda bottles. The bottling plant is not indicated, but it was manufactured in Owens-Illinois plant #2 in Huntington, WV. The date code "48" means it was made in 1948. Green bottle- Duraglas is embossed on the bottom of the green bottle. It is indicative of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, and the mark includes a "3" which indicates it was produced at O-I's plant #3, in Fairmont, WV. The back of the bottle has printing that indicates it was bottled in New York City. So the bottle was produced in Fairmont, the drink was bottled and the branding was printed in NYC and then sold in Atlanta. Where the date stamp usually is on the bottom just has a "5," indicating it may have been produced in 1950. We found another identical (but whole) green bottle at CCU 160 ACC 194 p35, not pictured. The company was active 1923-1974, closing just before MARTA excavations began. This doll seems to date to 1956, as that is when similar models are dated. The rubber may have been a lighter color originally but the company also manufactured darker-skinned dolls so it may have been a darker variant of the complete doll pictured. Title A name given to the resource Japanese Souvenir Vase Subject The topic of the resource Miscellaneous Description An account of the resource This is a very odd item in the collection, as we were able to identify it as Japanese due to the style of paint and enameling. Specifically, it is a "satsuma moriage" vase. Satsuma refers to the region the type of pottery originated in, and moriage is the term for the raised enamel decoration style. Its small size, low quality, and the fact it was found in Atlanta indicates that it was most likely a souvenir or an export from the 20th century. We were able to find a near-identical intact vase listed on ebay. It is difficult to date the vase since it has no markings. Antique forums indicated that similar small, crudely-painted vases were likely from the 1930s-40s, the interwar period. User "Ce BCA" on antiquers.com noted about a similarly painted vase, "Very unlikely to be by a noted artist nor exhibited in a museum, it is typical of factory produced items when the Japanese economy was in trouble in the inter-war period." The Weideman Company still exists as a local brewery in Cincinnati, Wiedemanns Fine Beer, however it was started in Newport, Kentucky. According to the brewery's website, "German immigrant George Wiedemann began brewing Wiedemann’s Fine Beer way back in 1870. He had moved from Cincinnati, where he was brewmaster at Kauffmann Brewery in Over-the-Rhine, to Newport, where he partnered with John Butcher at the Jackson Street Brewery. Marshall was the president of the Baby Ease Drug Company from around 1902 until the 1930s. Assumedly, this bottle contained Baby Ease. It was a remedy to help babies with various digestive problems. To sell the product, Marshall often used scare tactics in the newspapers that "Babies are dying by the thousands" and a "free gold ring" promotion. By 1906, the company's advertisements and packaging said it was based in Atlanta rather than Macon. According to the 1896 Macon City Directory, T.P. Marshall's drug store was located at the corner of Hawthorne St. and 2nd St. Today, this is a day care center. Made of porcelain, Frozen Charlotte Dolls, aka penny dolls, hail from Germany and came in a variety of sizes. Most were meant for use in the bathtub. They became popular in the United States around 1860, coinciding with the popularity of a morbid song about a girl named Charlotte who froze to death in a sleigh after refusing to wear a blanket over her fine clothes. These dolls served many purposes, including being baked into new year's King Cakes, but ultimately they were children's dolls that adults gave a morbid history. They would have normally had painted short, dark hair, red lips, and rosy cheeks. The button has a lined field with a raised border, 13 stars across the top, and an eagle with widespread wings clasping an anchor with its talons and an anchor rope in its beak. The size of this button (28.5 mm / 1 1/8") could have been used by either an officer or an enlisted man. Unfortunately for dating purposes, these button designs remained unchanged for the rest of the 19th and into the 20th century, even though the Marines adopted the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia in 1868. It even retained the entire paper label nearly perfectly. Sure enough, Wild Russian Vanya was sold in the 1960s-70s, making it only around 15 years old at most when it was excavated. It was exclusively produced and sold in the southeast, it was not a Russian import at all. Wild Russian Vanya was a fortified wine, also known as bum wine. These were cheaply made wines with spirits, fruit flavors, and sugar mixed in. Specifically, it was peach flavored. The label clearly states it was produced and bottled by Grower's Outlet Atlanta. It is not to be confused with the plant nursery also named Grower's Outlet which shows no sign of ever bottling alcohol. The trademark was owned by Seaboard Beverage Co. in Jacksonville, Florida, filed in 1962 but first used in 1960. In Florida, the drink was bottled by Seaboard themselves.
