<text>Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression.

This utilitarian stoneware has a vitrified off-white paste fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. The exterior is reddish-brown in color and can range to black or green depending on oxidization during the firing process. The clay used to make the slip has a high iron content, which contributes to the color, and can change or bleach if there is ash present during wood firing (Greer 1981:38). This slip is typically paired with another glaze, but can appear on its own, as seen in this collection.
It is generally fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. Alkaline glaze stoneware is mostly found and was produced in the Southeastern U.S. from North Carolina to Texas. It is characterized by a shiny transparent glaze made from a combination of wood ash or lime, clay, and some form of silicate (this can vary regionally). The color can range from green to dark or pale brown depending on the iron content of the clay and/or kiln conditions (Greer 1981). The texture can range from smooth and shiny to runny/streaky and may be more or less translucent depending on whether wood ash or lime was used as a base, with wood ash producing a more translucent glaze (Greer 1981:202).</text>

This bottle was made by the Illinois Glass Company with mold no. 511, which can be found in a 1906 catalog with close resemblance. The American Ginger Ale & Carbonating Co. was located at 96 S Forsyth in Atlanta according to a 1904 city directory. This is the only directory that has it listed, so the company was presumably short-lived.</text>

“The following treatment for chorea [a neurological disorder characterized by jerky involuntary movements affecting especially the shoulders, hips, and face] is highly recommended by Dr. L. Dr. Lemen claims that by alternating these two remedies in this way he has never failed to cure the worst cases in from three to five weeks."

                <text>The Ansley Hotel was an upscale hotel located on Forsyth St. at the corners of what are now Luckie St. and Williams St. close to Peachtree St. MARTA station. It is now a Dunkin and a parking lot.
It is difficult to date these plates since there are very little examples of this "AH" logo. One listing for a silver cocktail server with the logo believes it was from the very beginning of the hotel's operations (it opened in 1913), but we cannot find a source for this.
An image on Wikimedia Commons that dates to the 1910s appears to have chairs with the AH logo.
The Dinkler Hotel Co. purchased the hotel in 1927 and it was named to Dinkler Plaza Hotel in 1953, making this plate increasingly unlikely to be from later than the 50s.
The hotel was demolished in 1972, shortly before the MARTA excavations. </text>

                <text>The earliest mention of the Aphro Co. in the Atlanta Journal comes from an August 1902 "Wanted" section in which they were looking to buy a bottling machine. The next mention is from September 1903, in an actual advertisement. For the launch of the Aphro company, they offered prizes for people who collected the most amount of coupons from buying the drink. The fact that four Aphro bottles were found together implies the marketing strategy may have been successful (at least for a short time).

Originally they were located at 10 Tabernacle Pl. but put the property up for sale only a few months later in December, as announced in the real estate section of the newspaper. The property stayed up for sale for a few months --the newspaper announcements stopped in April 1904. There are no other mentions of them in the newspaper aside from a few job offerings, until the company's assets were sold in early 1908.
KolaWars: Atlanta says that the company instead became the "Non Such Pure Food Company" in 1907. It also mentions its address as 106 Luckie St.
Very little information on this company exists because it was in business for only a few years.</text>

                <text>P. Ballantine & Sons Brewing Company was based in Newark, NJ. After the Prohibition era the company was bought by the Badenhausen brothers, who popularized the brand. At its peak in the 1940s and 50s, XXX was the third most popular beer in the US. However, in the 60s, its popularity began to decline and though it is still produced by Pabst today, it is not the original recipe. This can design was used for a few decades and since our can is so rusty it is hard to determine an exact date. Given that it was found with other cans dating to the 50s, that is a reasonable assumption for the date.
The can conveniently has the address of the brewery, 295 Madison Avenue, New York, NY.</text>

Similar bottles with the diamond pattern were made from the 40s to the 70s.
This bottle did not necessarily contain root beer, either. All Barq's soda flavors used the same bottle with the flavor being indicated on the cap.
The bottom of the bottle usually has a date code, but in this case it is not immediately obvious, the three numbers are 13, 94 and 5 with a 9 in a circle. The 5 may be indicative of 1950 as that would make the most sense concerning a year.</text>

                <text>The story behind Goulds is exemplary of how muddy the historical side of historical archaeology can be. Two bottles, one called Gould Beverages (Quality Plus) and the other called Better Goulds Beverages, were found in the same box and they are the only two examples of Goulds in the collection. They look strikingly different. p407 was bottled by the Orange Crush Bottling Co. in Atlanta while p418 was bottled by the Goulds Better Beverage Co. in one of three cities in Mississippi. It could be assumed that the company was based in Mississippi and sold bottling rights to the Orange Crush Bottling Co. for distribution in Georgia, but upon looking at other examples of the bottles online there was an instance of Better Goulds being bottled by Crush in Atlanta as well. Notably, it also does not have the ingredients listed on the back as p418 does. p407 also looks stylistically older than p418 and the “better” implies it was improving an existing product.

p418 only has a small empty “keystone” mark on the base. The keystone shape was characteristic of the Knox Glass Co., and typically the specific plant would be identified by a letter within the keystone, but there is not one on this bottle. Knox Glass’s last plants were bought in 1968. p418 has the ingredients listed on the back, indicating it was likely produced after the 1966 Fair Packaging and Labelling Act. Therefore, this bottle can be dated from 1966-1968.

There were barely any internet resources on a beverage by the name of Gould other than Ebay listings for the bottles. This led me to check the Atlanta Journal-Constitution archives, where there was also no results for any variation of “Gould(s) beverages” or “Goulds Better Beverage Co.” The last option was to look into the Orange Crush Bottling Company, and though there were few internet sources on it as well, in the AJC archive I found that the president of the Orange Crush Bottling Co. was named Fred S. Gould and it went bankrupt in 1956.

This leads me to believe the Gould Beverage was named after said president. At some point before the bankruptcy, they decided to change the formula of the drink and brand it as “Better Goulds Beverage” (similar to “New Coke” in the 1980s). It is possible that the original Gould and Better Goulds could have existed at the same time, but in the case it was replaced it must have happened after p407 was produced in 1954. Perhaps after the bankruptcy of the Orange Crush Bottling Co., the Goulds Better Beverage Co. was formed in Mississippi and retained the same bottle design.

                <text>
Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression.

This utilitarian stoneware has an off-white vitrified paste generally fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. It is characterized by a combination of the off-white Bristol glaze and brown Albany slip. See “Bristol Glaze stoneware” and “Albany Slip stoneware” for an explanation of individual color variations. This combination is typically seen on liquor jugs and other utilitarian wares. When not applied to jugs, a Bristol glaze is typically applied to the exterior, with the Albany slip being on the interior. The color combination is done for decorative purposes and ease of cleaning but was very popular during the last half of the 19th century up through the early 20th century when the need for utilitarian jugs started to decline with the rise of glass and plastic after the Great depression, particularly in the southeast (Baldwin 1992:186).
</text>

                <text>Stoneware production in the U.S. began at different times but took off in the 19th century. After the civil war, stoneware production increased even further with the use of industrial pottery techniques, including the use of molds to create vessels. This industrialization put most local potteries out of business by the Great depression.

Bristol Glazed stoneware is characterized by an off-white glaze (Bristol) developed during the Victorian Era to cover the buff body of utilitarian Stoneware. While this originated in England, it became popular in North America in the late 1800s and is seen on a variety of stoneware vessels. The glaze is traditionally composed of feldspathic materials, like those used in porcelain glazes, and contains combinations of China clay and zinc oxide changing the opacity of the white color glaze (Greer 1981:210, 212). Like other utilitarian stoneware, Bristol Glaze stoneware has an off-white vitrified paste generally fired at 1200-1350° Celsius. If the glaze is applied on a vessel with a high iron content, it may have a pink-ish hue. It is most often seen to cover the entire vessel, instead of being combined with another glaze, after 1920 (Greer 1981:212).

In this collection, Bristol Glaze Stoneware is commonly found and often has patterns, maker’s marks, and decorations that aid in distinguishing between uses of the vessels. For example, the ship motif seen above comes from an Old Spice bottle, similar to the one in pictures 3 and 4.</text>

However, it contained two addictive, poisonous compounds, encouraging its popularity by creating addicts, and eventually ensuring its own demise. The first of the compounds to be recognized as potentially harmful was acetanilide. While the 1906 FDA did require that acetanilide be listed as one of the active ingredients, the more crucial information – namely that the compound could be fatal in regular doses – was not required on the label. (Fike 1987:111, Munsey 1992:5, Munsey 2010)

Bromo-Seltzer bottles and embossed fragments make up 48 of the medicinal vessels found in the MARTA collection. <text>Bruce's Juices was a brand of orange juice distributed in Atlanta by G.J. McWilliams at 223 Garnett St, according to a single 1928 advertisement. It originated in Tampa, Florida as early as 1926. The company sponsored a junior baseball team in Columbus, Georgia in 1940. A newspaper in Macon, Georgia has a few classified advertisements in search of a dealer for the juice brand in 1941, sent by the Fruit Juice Company Distributors of Thomasville, Georgia. The company went bankrupt, but reversed it, in 1955. Based on the style of the bottle, it is probably from the 1920s-1940s. The “S in a circle” mark was used by multiple glassmakers in the 20th century, none in the Southeast, so it is difficult to determine the manufacturer. </text>
