“The following treatment for chorea [a neurological disorder characterized by jerky involuntary movements affecting especially the shoulders, hips, and face] is highly recommended by Dr. L. E. Lemen, Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Gross Medical College of Denver; Health Commissioner of Denver; Surgeon to St. Joseph's Hospital; Division Surgeon of Union Pacific Railway; President of State Board of Commissioners of Insane Asylum, etc. Put the patient on Fowler's Solution of Arsenic and continue until the eyelids show distention, then stop the arsenic and administer Angier's Petroleum Emulsion until this symptom disappears. Dr. Lemen claims that by alternating these two remedies in this way he has never failed to cure the worst cases in from three to five weeks."

<text>Remedy for nervous headache, neuralgia, brain fatigue, sleeplessness, over-brain work, depression following alcoholic and other excesses, mental exhaustion Physical Description: acetanilide, 20 grains per ounce (drug active ingredients) Bromo-Seltzer was hugely popular for decades, selling an average of $20,000,000 a year. However, it contained two addictive, poisonous compounds, encouraging its popularity by creating addicts, and eventually ensuring its own demise. The first of the compounds to be recognized as potentially harmful was acetanilide. While the 1906 FDA did require that acetanilide be listed as one of the active ingredients, the more crucial information – namely that the compound could be fatal in regular doses – was not required on the label. (Fike 1987:111, Munsey 1992:5, Munsey 2010)

Bromo-Seltzer bottles and embossed fragments make up 48 of the medicinal vessels found in the MARTA collection. By far this is the most numerous product represented within the sample, both in quantity and variety. The four sizes are present, as well as one more recent bottle, shown in the above image. This post 1950 bottle was not included statistically but gives an impression of both the consistency of form as well as the variation of style and technology in bottling this popular medicine.

Material Type: Glass
Descriptor: Cobalt
Form: Circular
Embossing: BROMO-SELTZER/EMERSON/DRUG CO/BALTIMORE MD.
Product Name: Bromo-Seltzer
Target: Headache
Proprietary Product Manufacturer: Emerson Drug Co Source Location: Baltimore, MD
Source Region: Southeast
See: Artifact ID(s): (9Da89) P1052, P118, P1376, (9Fu91) P1452, P1334, P1616, P1480, P638, P1798, P1874, P1314, P1559, P1769, P1569, P1580, P1812, P1841, P1791, P1970, P1904, P3030, P3141, P2000, P3158, P3189, P3279, P3410, P3452, P557, P3213 Site ID(s): 9Da89, 9Fu91</text>

**Additional info from Group 1 – Fall 2017 Methods class (CCU 360W – Acc. # 173)
“Pepsi-Cola, first introduced as Brad’s drink in 1893 in North Carolina, has been a popular soda company since 1902. In the early 1900s, the company started distributed the drink in bottles. Since then, the bottles have come in different styles. The bottle found in our collection is dated to 1955. The bottle has the “wave” pattern on the shoulder that was started in the 1940s and came in two color variations: red and white, or red, white, and blue. With this new wave pattern, a double dot logo was used, but discontinued in 1948. The bottle in our collection has one dot between the Pepsi and Cola logo which places the bottle after 1950 when one dot began to be used. The date can also be found at the bottom of the bottle. The year is usually the second number.” (Fall 2017 – Group 1).

Little is known about the brand but it likely had multiple flavors that would have been distinguished by its cap, as was typical of Red Rock drinks. It was probably bottled in Atlanta- as well.
According to the user CanadianBottles on antique-bottles.net, "You may not be able to find any ads because Red Rock may not have considered it to be a brand worth advertising. It might not have even been a genuine brand in the way that Red Rock itself was, it could have been used for any other generic flavours the local bottling franchise sold. In those days a local franchise wouldn't usually just bottle the franchise product, they'd also bottle a bunch of other stuff using their own bottles. Red Rock may have decided to standardize the look of those other bottles."

One of the flavors was orange as evidenced by the last image of a full bottle via http://www.tazewell-orange.com/redrockappa.html</text>
